Lions Gate Bridge

The Lions Gate Bridge, a suspension bridge spanning Burrard Inlet, connects Vancouver to the North Shore and is a designated National Historic Site of Canada.

Vancouver, BC 718

The Lions Gate Bridge officially opened to traffic on May 29, 1938, a monumental achievement that dramatically reshaped the geography and development of Vancouver. The construction of the bridge was largely financed by the Guinness family of brewing fame, who owned large tracts of land in West Vancouver and saw the bridge as essential for developing their holdings. Designed by the firm of Monsarrat and Pratley, with construction managed by the Dominion Bridge Company, the bridge's elegant suspension design quickly became an iconic symbol of the city. Before its completion, travel to the North Shore was primarily by ferry, a time-consuming process. The bridge instantly provided a direct and efficient link, facilitating commerce, commuting, and the growth of communities like West Vancouver and North Vancouver. It faced some controversy due to its private ownership and tolls, which were eventually removed in 1963 when the province purchased the bridge. Today, the Lions Gate Bridge, named for the two mountain peaks resembling crouching lions, stands as a vital artery and a beloved landmark, carrying millions of vehicles annually and offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
