In the 1970s, as Markham began its transformation from a predominantly rural area to a rapidly growing urban centre, there was a concerted effort to preserve its agricultural heritage. The Markham Museum was established in 1971, initially envisioned as an open-air village showcasing historical buildings transported from various parts of the region. Local residents and historical societies played a crucial role in identifying and relocating structures like the Blacksmith Shop, the Cider Mill, and the Agricultural Hall. These buildings, dating back to the 19th and early 20th centuries, were meticulously restored to depict life as it was for early settlers and farmers. This dedication ensured that future generations would be able to physically experience and understand the origins of their community.
