St. Lawrence Market South

St. Lawrence Market South is a historic public market hall, a vibrant hub for food vendors, and a cherished Toronto institution.

Toronto, ON 513

The building now known as St. Lawrence Market South has a rich and varied history. Originally constructed in 1845, it served as Toronto's first permanent City Hall and a market space. The main floor was dedicated to vendors selling fresh produce, meats, and other goods, while the upper floor housed the city council chambers and offices. This dual function reflected the practical needs of a growing city, where civic administration and commerce were intimately linked. After the 'Old' City Hall at Queen and Bay Streets opened in 1899, the entire building was repurposed to exclusively serve as a market hall. This transition allowed for the expansion of vendor stalls and the creation of the vibrant marketplace that continues to thrive today, a testament to its enduring role as a focal point for community and commerce.
