Rogers Arena

Formerly General Motors Place, this arena was the site of the 2011 Stanley Cup riot, a significant and destructive public disturbance.

Vancouver, BC 661

On the evening of June 15, 2011, following the Vancouver Canucks' Game 7 loss in the Stanley Cup Finals, the area surrounding Rogers Arena, then known as General Motors Place, erupted into a violent riot. Tens of thousands of disappointed fans had gathered in the downtown core, expecting a victory celebration. Instead, the emotional defeat ignited widespread anger and frustration. Large crowds, fueled by alcohol and mob mentality, began to loot stores, smash windows, and set fires to vehicles. Police, initially overwhelmed, deployed tear gas and rubber bullets in an attempt to disperse the throngs. The air filled with the sounds of breaking glass, sirens, and shouts. The destruction spread rapidly, causing millions of dollars in damages to businesses and public property. The riot continued for several hours, leaving a trail of devastation and a stain on the city's reputation. The aftermath involved extensive police investigations, numerous arrests, and a difficult period of reflection for Vancouver, prompting discussions about crowd control, civic responsibility, and the darker side of sports fandom.
