Vancouver Art Gallery

The Vancouver Art Gallery, housed in a grand Neoclassical building that was once the provincial courthouse, is a prominent cultural institution.

Vancouver, BC 627

The grand Neoclassical building that now houses the Vancouver Art Gallery was originally constructed in 1906 as the provincial courthouse. Designed by Francis Rattenbury, the architect also responsible for the Parliament Buildings in Victoria, it was an imposing structure of stone, featuring columns, porticos, and a commanding presence on Hornby Street. For decades, it served as the seat of justice for British Columbia. However, as the city grew and its legal needs expanded, a new courthouse was eventually required. In 1983, following a significant renovation and adaptation project, the historic building was given a new life as the home of the Vancouver Art Gallery. This move allowed the gallery, which had previously occupied a more modest space, to expand its exhibitions and collections significantly. The transformation preserved the architectural integrity of the building while repurposing it for cultural enrichment. Today, the former courthouse continues its public service, albeit in a different capacity, inviting visitors to engage with art and history within its stately walls, a remarkable example of adaptive reuse in the heart of the city.
