Orpheum Theatre

The Orpheum Theatre is a lavishly restored atmospheric theatre, originally built for vaudeville and now serving as a major concert hall and home to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.

Vancouver, BC 651

On November 7, 1927, the Orpheum Theatre opened its grand doors to an eager Vancouver public. Designed by renowned theatre architect B. Marcus Priteca, this atmospheric theatre was a masterpiece of Spanish Baroque Revival style, featuring intricate plasterwork, gilded details, and a ceiling painted to resemble a night sky with twinkling stars. It was built as a vaudeville palace, hosting a dazzling array of live acts, from comedians and musicians to dancers and acrobats. As cinema gained popularity, the Orpheum transitioned into a movie palace, showing the latest Hollywood blockbusters. By the 1970s, however, its future was uncertain, with plans for demolition to make way for a modern multiplex. A passionate 'Save the Orpheum' campaign, led by citizens and artists, rallied against its destruction. The City of Vancouver ultimately purchased the theatre in 1974 for $7.1 million, ensuring its preservation. Following extensive renovations, the Orpheum reopened in 1977 as a civic concert hall, becoming the permanent home of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and a cherished venue for a wide range of musical performances, a testament to community spirit saving a cultural treasure.
