Roy Thomson Hall

Roy Thomson Hall is a prominent concert hall in Toronto, renowned for its distinctive circular design and excellent acoustics, serving as the home of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

Toronto, ON 525

When Roy Thomson Hall opened its doors in 1982, designed by Arthur Erickson, it was hailed for its striking circular architecture and innovative interior. However, shortly after its grand opening, concerns began to emerge regarding its acoustics. While visually impressive, some musicians and critics found the sound to be too dry and lacking in warmth, particularly for orchestral performances. Over the next two decades, various minor adjustments were made, but a more comprehensive solution was needed. In 2002, a major renovation project was undertaken, focusing specifically on enhancing the hall's acoustical properties. This involved significant changes to the ceiling, walls, and stage area, including the installation of new reflective panels and sound-absorbing materials, ultimately transforming the listening experience and cementing its reputation as a world-class concert venue.
