Wyckoff House Museum

The oldest house in New York State, the Wyckoff House was the site of early Dutch colonial life and later a significant site for African American farming and community building.

Brooklyn, NY 11203

In 1637, Wouter van Twiller, then Director-General of New Netherland, granted Pieter Claesen Wyckoff a patent for 120 morgens of land in Flatlands, then known as Amersfoort. Wyckoff, a carpenter by trade, likely built the core of what is now the Wyckoff House in 1652. This simple one-and-a-half-story dwelling, constructed in the Dutch colonial style with a steeply pitched gable roof, was not only his home but also the center of his agricultural operations. The Wyckoff family quickly became prominent farmers in the area, cultivating crops like wheat and corn, and raising livestock. Their success and the continued occupation of the property by generations of Wyckoffs for over 250 years transformed this initial land grant into a enduring symbol of early European settlement in Brooklyn, illustrating the persistent efforts required to establish a new life in the unfamiliar landscape of the New World. The house, through its continued existence, provides a tangible link to the early days of Brooklyn's development, showcasing the architectural and agricultural practices that defined the era.
