On September 13, 2006, a lone gunman, Kimveer Gill, opened fire on students outside and inside Dawson College. The attack began shortly after noon when Gill, armed with a Beretta Cx4 Storm, a Glock 21, and a shotgun, started shooting near the entrance of the college. He then entered the school's cafeteria, continuing his rampage. Students and staff scrambled for cover, barricading themselves in classrooms or fleeing the building. Police officers, who were already in the vicinity, responded quickly. The exchange of gunfire between Gill and the police brought the incident to a close when Gill took his own life. Anastasios Leventis, 18, a student, died from his injuries, and 19 others were wounded. The event sent shockwaves through Montreal and across Canada, prompting renewed discussions about gun control and school safety. The college was closed for several days, and a memorial was established to honor the victims and support the community through the healing process.
