Sunnylands, the sprawling 200-acre estate in Rancho Mirage, was completed in 1966 as the winter retreat of philanthropists Walter and Leonore Annenberg. Designed by A. Quincy Jones, the pink-roofed mid-century modern mansion and its immaculate grounds became a renowned sanctuary for world leaders, royalty, and celebrities. Often referred to as the 'Camp David of the West,' Sunnylands hosted seven U.S. presidents, including Ronald Reagan, who frequently visited, and George H.W. Bush, who held a summit here. Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip were also guests, enjoying the estate's serene beauty. The Annenbergs envisioned Sunnylands as a place for high-level discussions and intellectual exchange. After their passing, the estate was transformed into a non-profit center dedicated to promoting international understanding and addressing serious policy issues. Today, its exquisite gardens are open to the public, offering a glimpse into this remarkable legacy of philanthropy, diplomacy, and architectural significance.
