In 1977, the Gastown Steam Clock was unveiled, a whimsical addition to the revitalized Gastown district. Designed by horologist Raymond Saunders, the clock was conceived as a way to cover a steam grate and prevent homeless people from sleeping on it during the colder months. Rather than just a functional cover, Saunders envisioned a grand, Victorian-style timepiece that would become a focal point. Built with steam from the city's underground steam heating system, the clock whistles and emits steam from its five whistles on the hour, playing a tune similar to the Westminster Chimes. Its unique mechanism quickly made it a beloved landmark, drawing tourists who gather to watch its hourly performance, and symbolizing the successful transformation of Gastown from a rundown area into a vibrant historic district.
