Cave and Basin National Historic Site

The birthplace of Canada's national park system, featuring natural thermal mineral springs and a rich history of conservation.

Banff, AB 114

In 1883, three Canadian Pacific Railway workers, Frank McCabe, William McCardell, and Thomas McCardell, stumbled upon a steaming cave on the lower slopes of Sulphur Mountain. Inside, they found a natural thermal mineral spring, later known as the Cave, emanating warm, sulfurous water. Their discovery quickly drew attention, leading to competing claims for ownership of the lucrative hot springs. Recognizing the potential for tourism and the importance of protecting this unique natural wonder, Prime Minister John A. Macdonald established a small federal reserve around the springs in 1885. This 26-square-kilometer parcel of land, initially called the 'Banff Hot Springs Reserve,' marked the beginning of Canada's national park system, laying the groundwork for the future Banff National Park and a broader conservation movement.
