The vision for the Cathedral of the Transfiguration began with the Slovak Greek Catholic community in Canada, who sought a grand spiritual home that reflected their rich Eastern Catholic heritage. Construction commenced in 1984, with the design drawing heavily from traditional Byzantine architecture, characterized by its distinctive domes and intricate interior iconography. The project was a massive undertaking, requiring significant financial contributions and countless hours of volunteer labour from the dedicated community. Every detail, from the grand facade to the detailed frescoes, was meticulously planned to evoke a sense of reverence and spiritual awe. The completion of the cathedral was not just an architectural achievement, but a profound realization of a long-held dream, providing a central place of worship and cultural preservation for Slovak Greek Catholics across Canada.
