Banff Park Museum National Historic Site

Canada's oldest natural history museum, housed in a striking log and stone building, showcasing the rich biodiversity of the Rockies.

Banff, AB 114

The Banff Park Museum traces its origins to 1895 when Norman Luxton, a prominent Banff resident, began collecting natural history specimens from the surrounding area. His collection quickly outgrew its initial space, and by 1903, the Canadian government commissioned the construction of a dedicated museum building. Designed by architect John Stocks, the museum's distinctive 'railway pagoda' style, with its rustic log and stone construction, was intended to blend harmoniously with the wilderness setting. It was envisioned as a 'museum of museums,' housing a comprehensive collection of flora and fauna unique to the Rocky Mountains. Early exhibits featured taxidermied animals, geological samples, and botanical specimens, all meticulously cataloged to educate visitors about the region's natural heritage.
