In 1915, Robert C. Kidd opened his first grocery store at 1321 East Hastings Street in Vancouver. He named it 'Overwaitea,' a quirky moniker derived from his promise to sell 18 ounces of tea for the price of a pound – effectively 'over-weight tea.' This early commitment to value and customer satisfaction laid the foundation for what would become one of Western Canada's most recognizable grocery chains. The store quickly gained a reputation for its competitive prices and its focus on fresh produce and quality staples, catering to the diverse and growing community in East Vancouver. Kidd's innovative approach to retail, including early adoption of self-service models, helped the store thrive through the challenging decades of the early to mid-20th century. By the 1950s, the single 'Overwaitea' store had expanded into a small chain, and the brand was well-established in the Vancouver area. While the name would later evolve into Save-On-Foods, this original location remains a significant landmark, marking the humble beginnings of a retail giant that continues to serve communities across Western Canada.
