The original Dorset Scenic Tower was constructed in 1922 as a fire lookout tower, a crucial tool in protecting Muskoka's vast timber resources from devastating wildfires. Perched high above the landscape, forest rangers would scan the horizon for plumes of smoke, quickly pinpointing potential threats. This function was vital in an era when forestry was a dominant industry in the region. As fire detection methods evolved, the tower transitioned from a purely utilitarian role to a popular tourist attraction. The current steel structure, built in 1967, replaced the earlier wooden towers and continues to draw thousands of visitors annually. Ascending the 131 steps to the observation deck offers breathtaking 360-degree views of Lake of Bays and the endless expanse of the Algonquin Highlands, especially stunning during the autumn foliage season. It serves as a reminder of both the region's natural heritage and the historical efforts to protect it.
