The Sylvia Hotel

An iconic West End landmark, The Sylvia Hotel was Vancouver's first high-rise apartment building and later a beloved hotel known for its distinctive ivy-covered facade and beachfront location.

Vancouver, BC 626

The Sylvia Hotel, designed by architect W.P. White, opened in 1912 as 'The Sylvia Court Apartments,' a luxurious, eight-storey apartment building that was, at the time, the tallest building in Vancouver's West End. Named after Sylvia Goldstein, the daughter of the original developer, it quickly became a desirable address for the city's elite, offering stunning views of English Bay and Stanley Park. Its distinctive reinforced concrete structure and elegant design set it apart. During the Great Depression, the building struggled to fill its apartments, leading to its conversion into a hotel in 1936. The onset of World War II further impacted its operations, with many rooms rented to long-term residents and military personnel. However, it was after the war, particularly in the 1960s, that the Sylvia Hotel truly blossomed into a beloved Vancouver institution. Its ivy-clad exterior, which eventually covered much of its facade, became an iconic visual marker for the city. Its proximity to English Bay beach and its quaint, historic charm made it a popular destination for tourists and locals alike, cementing its place as a quintessential Vancouver experience. It remains a family-run establishment, preserving much of its original character.
