Alden Freeman built this Mediterranean Revival house in 1930, calling it Casa Casuarina and modeling parts of it on the Alcázar de Colón in Santo Domingo. Gianni Versace bought it in 1992, spent a reported $33 million on the mansion and the hotel next door, and added the mosaic pool with 24-karat gold tiles. His arrival is widely credited with turning a decaying South Beach into an international address. On the morning of July 15, 1997, Versace was shot on the front steps returning from buying magazines. It is now a hotel, and people still stop on the sidewalk at those steps.
