Place Ville Marie

An iconic cross-shaped skyscraper and part of Montreal's Underground City, symbolizing the city's mid-century modernization.

Montreal, QC 336

In the early 1960s, Montreal was undergoing a period of rapid modernization, and Place Ville Marie became its shining emblem. Designed by American architect I.M. Pei, the 47-story cross-shaped skyscraper was a groundbreaking addition to the city's skyline, completed in 1962. It was not merely a building but an entire complex, incorporating an underground shopping mall that initiated Montreal's famous 'Underground City' (RESO). The distinctive cruciform design allowed for maximum natural light in the office spaces and created a striking visual landmark. Its construction was a bold statement of confidence in Montreal's future as a major North American business hub, attracting international corporations and becoming a symbol of the city's ambition and progress in the lead-up to Expo 67. Its rotating beacon at night became a familiar sight, guiding eyes towards the heart of downtown.
