Casa Loma

Casa Loma is a majestic Gothic Revival style mansion and garden, once the residence of financier Sir Henry Pellatt, now a museum and popular event venue.

Toronto, ON 518

Construction of Casa Loma began in 1911, a dream project for Sir Henry Pellatt, a prominent Toronto financier and industrialist. He envisioned a grand European-style castle, complete with secret passages, a stable, and elaborate gardens. The cost was astronomical, estimated at $3.5 million (equivalent to over $70 million today), employing 300 workmen and taking three years to complete. Sir Henry and his wife, Lady Mary, enjoyed their opulent home for less than a decade. Their lavish lifestyle, combined with financial setbacks from a downturn in the economy and bad investments, led to their eventual ruin. By 1923, Sir Henry was forced to sell his beloved castle and its contents, a poignant end to a magnificent, albeit financially unsustainable, dream.
